Now that The Super Mario Bros. Movie is streaming on Peacock, fans of the film — and of Nintendo video games — can rewatch it and pause it whenever they want so that they catch every single Easter egg. And, well, it’s going to take a lot of pausing, because there are an astounding number of Easter eggs and little references to iconic games scattered throughout the whole movie. Universal Pictures released two short videos featuring the creators and stars of the movie, which premiered in theaters in April of this year. All of the talent, including directors Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, Jack Black (Bowser), Keegan-Michael Key (Toad), and Mario’s creator Shigeru Miyamoto, can’t emphasize enough how many Easter eggs are in the film. The videos spotlight a couple of the hardest-to-find Easter eggs in the movie. In the first act of the film, for example, there’s a scene where Mario (Chris Pratt) and Luigi (Charlie Day) bust through a brick wall. The hole they create in the bricks is the same shape as Mario’s head from the original 8-bit Super Mario Bros. game. “Nobody notices it,” Jelenic says in the video. “And that to me is a great easter egg, doesn’t take away from the storytelling but as soon as you notice it will warm your heart and tell you that you’re in good hands.”RELATED: Our favorite 'Super Mario Bros. PC Gaming Sign in to your Game Rant account By now most readers know our thoughts on Techland’s latest first person survival title Dying Light, but if not make sure to read our review. While the game showed a lot of potential, and offered some enjoyable gameplay and mechanics, the overall product fell slightly short of our expectations. However, if there’s one overwhelmingly positive quality about the game it’s that Dying Light always kept its sense of humor. It’s wholly evident while playing the game, but is becoming clearer as players uncover more playful secrets and Easter Eggs within the new release. From an EXPcalibur sword to a parody of Destiny’s loot cave, Dying Light has so far offered up some pretty fun Easter Eggs. This latest one, though, is arguably the best we’ve seen yet. Check it out below. [HTML1] As the video shows, there is a special pipe hidden in the second open world area of Dying Light that will unlock an homage to one of the greatest games and most iconic game levels of all time. We, of course, are talking about Super Mario Bros. and its World 1-1 level. What’s great about this World 1-1 homage is that the Dying Light mechanics give players the chance to explore the level from the first person perspective and with some added parkour skills. But even though there are some changes, developer Techland still did a solid job of replicating the look and feel of original Super Mario Bros. Even the zombies look like goombas. More importantly than that, the World 1-1 Easter Egg actually rewards players with some experience after reaching the final flagpole. But the biggest takeaway from the Easter Egg is likely the feeling of nostalgia that seeing those crude blocks and generic clouds brings out. Now, we’re curious more than ever to uncover all the Easter Eggs Dying Light has packed within its admittedly substantial campaign and sprawling open world areas. We thought Excalibur was just a tiny in-joke, but this Super Mario Bros. homage makes us think the known Easter Eggs are just the tip of the iceberg. The hunt for more Dying Light secrets is on! _____________________________________________ Read Game Rant's Dying Light Review _____________________________________________ Have you found any other cool Easter Eggs in Dying Light? The second trailer for The Super Mario Bros. Movie has arrived, and unlike the brief teaser that we saw in October, this trailer is jam-packed with enough details, references and Easter eggs to sink an airship. Strap on your helmets and find your nearest Kart or Motorbike, it’s time to break down all of the plot details, and deep-cut references that we found in the new Super Mario Bros. movie Trailer.Mario Enters the ArenaThe trailer starts with a shot of Mario nervously walking out into a crowded arena as the soundtrack references the iconic theme of World 1-1 from the Super Mario Bros. NES Game.As the crowd chants Mario’s name, we’re reminded of this famous Super Mario Bros 3 commercial, featuring a crowd of Mario Fans so large that they can be seen from space.Mario vs. Donkey Kong Mario and Donkey Kong are standing on a bright-red girder, and in this shot you can see other details, such as a blue ladder, barrels and tires suspended in the air, and more red platforms directly below them. This all emulates the exact level layouts you would see in the original Donkey Kong arcade game where Mario and Donkey Kong made their first appearances. The Cranky Kong CameoPeach and Cranky Kong are here too, making their first appearances in the trailer, and Cranky Kong seems to be presiding over the contest as some sort of ruler or monarch. Perhaps this is a world that is somewhat removed from Princess Peach’s castle and is under Kong rule instead?More Arena Easter EggsThere are other references in this arena as well, which point to it being owned by the Kongs, such as the carved bananas in the stands and the audience being filled predominately with more Kongs. Of course, it’s not just DK infrastructure represented in this arena. Mario’s iconic yellow blocks and brick blocks are visible in the background as well. None of these blocks have question marks on them, so Mario probably won’t receive any power-ups in this particular fight.Super Smash Bros.
