BitLocker Virus: Overview, How It Works, and Solution!

Can be used to help determine the root cause of the recovery:☑️Question🔲Which BitLocker protection mode is configured (TPM, TPM + PIN, TPM + startup key, startup key only)?🔲If TPM mode is configured, was recovery caused by a boot file change?🔲Which PCR profile is in use on the device?🔲Did the user merely forget the PIN or lose the startup key?🔲If recovery was caused by a boot file change, is the boot file change due to an intended user action (for example, BIOS upgrade), or a malicious software?🔲When was the user last able to start the device successfully, and what might have happened to the device since then?🔲Might the user have encountered malicious software or left the device unattended since the last successful startup? To help answer these questions, you can use the manage-bde.exe -status command to view the current configuration and protection mode. Scan the event log to find events that help indicate why recovery was initiated (for example, if a boot file change occurred).Resolve the root causeAfter you identify the cause of the recovery, BitLocker protection can be reset to avoid recovery on every startup. The details of the reset can vary according to the root cause of the recovery. If root cause can't be determined, or if a malicious software or a rootkit infects the device, the helpdesk should apply best-practice virus policies to react appropriately.NoteBitLocker validation profile reset can be performed by suspending and resuming BitLocker. If a user has forgotten the PIN, the PIN must be reset while signed on to the computer in order to prevent BitLocker from initiating recovery each time the computer is restarted. To prevent continued recovery due to an unknown PIN:Unlock the device using the recovery passwordFrom the BitLocker Control Panel applet, expand the drive and then select Change PINIn the BitLocker Drive Encryption dialog, select Reset a forgotten PIN. If the signed in account isn't an administrator account, you must provide administrative credentialsIn the PIN reset dialog, provide and confirm the new PIN to be used and then select FinishThe new PIN can be used the next time the drive needs to be unlockedIf the USB flash drive that contains the startup key is lost, you can unlock the drive using the recovery key. A new startup can then be created using PowerShell, the Command Prompt, or the BitLocker Control Panel applet. For examples how to add BitLocker protectors, review the BitLocker operations guideThis error occurs if the firmware is updated. BitLocker should be suspended before making changes to the firmware. Protection should then be resumed after the firmware update is complete. Suspending BitLocker prevents the device from going into recovery mode. However, if changes happen when BitLocker protection is on, the recovery password can be used to unlock the drive and the platform validation profile is updated so that recovery doesn't occur the next time. For examples how to suspend and resume BitLocker protectors, review the BitLocker operations guideRotate passwordsAdministrators can configure a policy setting to enable automatic recovery password rotation for Microsoft Entra joined and. Pays the licensing fee and then it is read into your Microsoft account when you register it with MS. I'm sure if this is really how the process works but Lenovo does describe in somewhat this way. I logged in to the MS account, did a search, found that it is located in "Devices" and from there it is deeply buried. Got there finally and was told that since the change of email address is still pending I could not acccess the Bitlocker code. I requested a change of my wife's email address (its her computer) from MS, but apparently one must wait 30 days before they decide that you are allowed to have your new email address with their precious account. Really ????? And they won't allow me to have my BitLocker code until Dec. 16th. Unbelieveable! [end of rant]The question remains, what is going on with the Programs & Features list and its scrollbar. Nothing else seems to be affected. I really don't want to do a reset. Jun 12, 2015 67,182 7,030 168,140 #15 Have you tried running anti virus scans to see if its a random infection? December 21, 2016, 9:26pm 21 Which storry? - the topic is not about (me) someone crying for help, its about classification of a tool that claims to preemptively stop the thread. Problem is - targeted phishing mails for HR personnel with macro virus that assembles the virus, drive-by downloads caused by ads and 0-days, ... you can not always blame it on the stupid user, not anymore. The time of click me and accept the runnas are sadly over mostly.Back on topic - as ANYONE - got a sample of any of the ransomware goodies for me to test? Ryokeen1 December 21, 2016, 9:38pm 22 Th3Z0ne,A co-worker collects all forms of Malware and keeps it on a locked USB and then runs them in a triple virtual environment. Anything in particular you're looking for? Th3Z0ne December 21, 2016, 9:55pm 23 Well just some crypt-locker (any - probably more recent is preferred), preferred in an encrypted non malicious state - so I can test RansomFree, and weather it realy can stop it.Or maybe he is interested in testing so we do not need to send malware around in addition to whats already creeping through the internets? malus December 22, 2016, 11:04am 24 So does anybody have a way to test this software?I've read the full Q&A on their website to see how the tool works, and basically, it stops any program which is trying to encrypt something.I've installed VeraCrypt en AXcrypt and tried to encrypt some files and folders with the expectation that I would be stopped by the program (RansomFree).Except it didn't stop me, which makes me unsure about if it's working correctly. So if anybody finds/knows a way to test this software, please let me know! Th3Z0ne December 22, 2016, 2:20pm 25 If you do not touch it's bounty/trap/honeypot files, that it spreads around the filesystem it won't be triggered. It has hidden files all over the place, which it closely watches for changes. Sadly without a cryptlocker in my possession at the moment I can not test it, despite the VM being ready I'm gonna load this up on a VM and check it.The reminds me @zoltan weren't you in the discussion about the bitlocker bypass on Windows a few weeks ago? Where you could get a CMD during the PE patching? I couldn't get in with either our encryption method nor with veracrypt. Zoltan December 22, 2016, 5:41pm 27 It's triggered by W10 in-place upgrade, so you can't trigger it yourself, it only works if there is a patch pushed by MS.When you know it's going to push because of the restart message, you can trigger it by clicking "restart system now", and then you Shift-F10 into the CMD that gives you system, thereby bypassing BitLocker. It didn't bypass Veracrypt though, so no luck bypassing cryptlockers, as they are obviously not based on BitLocker, or MS could unlock them (as proven by the concept of the in-place updates). You can trigger it yourself by patching an unpatched workstation,
