Embracer has shut down Pieces Interactive, the studio that recently developed the Alone in the Dark Reboot for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.Pieces Interactive, acquired by THQ Nordic in 2017, worked on the Titan Quest franchise. Its most recent game, Alone in the Dark, received mixed critical reception at launch but was improved with subsequent patches. “Alone in the Dark presents a promising yet imperfect reimagining that captures the essence of a mesmerising, atmospheric adventure game.” said Bogdan Roberts in our review back in March.There’s been no official statement from Embracer, but we have reached out for comment.The official website for Pieces has been updated with the following splash image, confirming the closure.“Pieces Interactive released over ten titles on PC, Console and Mobile since 2007, both our own concepts such as Puzzlegeddon, Fret Nice, Leviathan Warships, Robo Surf and Kill to Collect, as well as work for hire titles such as Magicka 2 and several DLCs for Magicka. The recent Alone in the Dark reboot was another attempt to breathe new life into the iconic horror series, but it seems it was all in vain. Developer Pieces Interactive is now bidding farewell as the studio prepares to close its doors for good.One more for the pileAfter being bought out by Embracer Group in 2017, the team behind the latest Alone in the Dark game is no more. In a post on the studio’s website and X account, a message of thanks was offered to fans. It simply reads: “Thanks for playing with us,” with the years 2007 to 2024 indicating how long the developer has been in the industry.The news is unlikely to come as a surprise to many, given how AitD did not quite do as well as many had hoped. In a fairly recent financial report, Embracer Group said the game – although was received quite well – “performed below management expectations.”As a result, Pieces Interactive is no more, and it’s likely the poor performance of its latest release is the main reason behind the closure.The message on the studio website also outlines some of the other projects the team has been involved with in the past. Chief among them is Magicka 2 and expansions for the Titan Quest series.
